He was born in Boulder, Colorado in 1975 and began his entrepreneurial journey at a young age, starting his first business in high school. Polis went on to found several successful tech companies, including BlueMountainArts. com, ProFlowers. com, and American Information Systems. In addition to his successful business ventures, Polis has been actively involved in politics. He served on the Colorado State Board of Education from 2001 to 2007, advocating for education reform and the expansion of charter schools. In 2008, he ran for and won a seat in the U. S. House of Representatives, representing Colorado's 2nd congressional district. He served in Congress for a total of five terms, becoming the first openly gay parent to serve in Congress. Throughout his political career, Polis has been known for his progressive stances on a variety of issues. He has been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, marijuana legalization, renewable energy, and affordable healthcare. In 2018, he ran for governor of Colorado and won, becoming the first openly gay person to be elected governor in the United States. As governor, Polis has remained committed to his progressive agenda. He has prioritized education reform, implementing free full-day kindergarten in Colorado and advocating for increased funding for schools.
