In 2010, Hickenlooper ran for governor of Colorado and won, becoming the first Denver mayor to be elected governor in over a century. He successfully implemented several policies, including the expansion of Medicaid, the legalization of recreational marijuana, and the passage of gun control measures. S Senate and won the Democratic nomination for the 2020 Senate race in Colorado.
