First Responder Gator

First Responder Gator is a student organization based at the University of Florida. The organization is dedicated to providing training in emergency first response and CPR to students and members of the Gainesville community.

History

Established in 2008, the group has been committed to offering opportunities in emergency medicine for University of Florida students. They work in partnership with Gainesville Fire Rescue and Santa Fe College EMS Programs to enhance their training and engage with the community.

Activities

First Responder Gator offers a 10-week First Responder Certification Course, which is available during the Fall, Spring, and Summer C semesters. This course includes hands-on training and lectures, providing students with the skills necessary for pre-hospital care, such as basic life support and first aid techniques. The curriculum includes topics like patient assessment, airway management, and dealing with traumatic injuries. Additionally, students receive the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which covers CPR, AED use, and more.

The organization encourages students to volunteer with emergency medical response programs, which helps them gain clinical experience valuable for future healthcare careers. It serves as a foundational step for those aspiring to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
