Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre

Overview

Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre is a nonprofit arts organization based in Frankfort, Michigan. It was established to integrate professional Chicago theatrical experiences into the community of Northern Michigan.

History

Founded in 2003 by Elizabeth Laidlaw, the theatre initially performed "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Elberta Bandshell. Following successful audience reception, the theatre expanded its productions over subsequent years. By 2005, Christy Arington had established free children's theater workshops, which remain a key part of the organization's programming. In 2006, Lakeside formalized an intern program for high school students, providing educational and performance opportunities. Tank Hill became the theatre's home in 2010, offering a natural setting for outdoor performances. The Apprentice Program was introduced in 2014 to offer opportunities for Chicago area college students. Christy Arington assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2018, and the organization achieved 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2019.

Education and Performance

Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre focuses on education and performance, incorporating Chicago's theatrical expertise into its programming. It offers workshops for both children and adults, helping to promote understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare's works. The theatre's educational efforts were adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to include virtual workshops supporting local high school curricula. In 2023, the theatre returned to live performances with "The Tempest" at Tank Hill, its first live show since 2019.

Funding and Recognition

The theatre relies on donations, sponsorships, and grants such as those from The Robert and Patricia Colby Foundation to support its activities. This financial support is crucial for maintaining its status as a charitable arts service organization.

Leadership and Personnel

Key personnel include Christy Arington as Artistic Director, who has been instrumental in shaping the educational programs. Danny Taylor serves as Education Director and has been involved with Lakeside Shakespeare for numerous seasons. Other notable contributors include Jillian Wesley, who has directed and acted with the company, and various guest actors from Chicago's theater scene.
