Islamic Society of Greater Portland is a non profit organization that promotes understanding among Muslims and non-Muslims in the greater Portland area. 1. To carry out activities and projects related to religious social charitable and educational aspects of the life of the community. 2. To foster cordial relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims and to promote the understanding of Islam among non-Muslims. 3. To organize outreach programs with government agencies officials and interfaith organizations.

It was small dispersed and without a mosques. Muslims tended to socialize primarily within their individual ethnic groups. In 1975 five young Pakistani families with small children began meeting biweekly to study the Quran and talk about practicing Islam within an American context.
