Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded on March 29, 1882, by Blessed Michael J. McGivney. It is primarily a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States but has grown into a worldwide organization. As of 2024, the Knights reported having over 2.1 million members globally.

History and Purpose

The organization was established to provide financial aid to the sick, disabled, and needy members and their families. It operates under the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The Knights of Columbus supports a wide range of charitable activities, including disaster relief, refugee aid, and programs for people with disabilities.

Charitable Activities

• Disaster Relief: The Knights of Columbus has a long-standing tradition of providing aid following natural disasters. They contributed significantly to relief efforts after events like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
• Refugee Support: The organization has supported refugees globally, notably in the Middle East and Ukraine, providing humanitarian aid such as food, shelter, and medical care.
• Health Initiatives: The Knights have supported health programs, including a notable ultrasound initiative aimed at reducing abortion by providing ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers.
• Education and Community: They offer scholarships and support educational programs for seminarians and Catholic institutions. Programs like "Coats for Kids" provide winter clothing to needy children.

Financial and Investment Activities

The Knights of Columbus operates a substantial insurance company, offering financial security to members while also supporting charitable projects. Additionally, they manage investments through Knights of Columbus Asset Advisors, aligning their investments with Catholic social teachings.

Structure and Membership

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is limited to practicing Catholic men. The organization includes female auxiliaries like the Columbiettes and youth groups such as the Columbian Squires. There are over 17,000 local councils worldwide, including hundreds on college campuses. The Order is structured into four degrees, each highlighting core principles of the Order.
