Santa Cruz County Horsemen's Association

The Santa Cruz County Horsemen's Association (SCCHA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting interest in horses and horsemanship, fostering a community among horse enthusiasts, and developing equestrian activities in Santa Cruz County, California.

History

The association was founded in October 1944 by a group led by Margaret Dellamonica, a prominent figure in the horse racing community. Articles of incorporation were filed on January 9, 1945, with Charles Parker as the first president. Initially, activities were held at Wagner Grove in De LaVeaga Park on leased land, but the organization moved to its current location on Graham Hill Road after 1946.

In its early years, SCCHA not only promoted horse activities but also formed a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Posse and a Junior Horsemen's Association. The association played a crucial role in maintaining and developing county-wide trails and fostering a deep understanding between humans and horses.

Activities and Initiatives

Over the years, the association has been involved in various equestrian activities, including shows, clinics, trail rides, gymkhanas, and educational events. The Pony Club, a national organization focused on teaching young people about horse care and riding, has used the Graham Hill Showgrounds for its activities since the founding of its first West Coast chapter in 1956.

SCCHA has also been instrumental in community service, notably aiding in the evacuation of horses during the Lexington fire in 1985 and supporting flooded stables in Felton in 1986.

Challenges and Growth

In the mid-1970s, the gas crisis affected the association's activities, leading to decreased participation in big shows and competitions. However, the organization continued its efforts, eventually merging with the San Lorenzo Valley Horsemen's club in 1980.

By the late 1990s, changes in land ownership led to a downsizing of the Graham Hill Showgrounds, but this transition eventually resulted in the site becoming an independent County Equestrian Park, enabling an increase in events and community participation.

Role in the Equestrian Community

As one of the oldest and most influential horse clubs in California, SCCHA continues to play a vital role in preserving and promoting horse-related interests in Santa Cruz County. Its historical contributions and ongoing activities have made it a cornerstone of the local equestrian community.
