Save Farmland

Save Farmland is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and promoting agricultural land, particularly in the Flathead Valley, Montana. Founded with the mission to preserve farmland from development and support local farming communities, it operates as a 501(c)(3) entity.

History and Development

The idea of Save Farmland began as a mural in Whitefish, Montana, which raised awareness about the rapid disappearance of agricultural land due to development. This initiative transformed into a full-fledged nonprofit after a 40-acre parcel was donated for conservation purposes. The organization has evolved through community engagement, listening to local needs, and building partnerships to address the challenges faced by small farmers and ranchers.

Mission and Programs

Save Farmland focuses on three primary pillars:

• Land Protection: Acquiring critical agricultural land and securing it through easements to prevent future development.
• Farmer & Rancher Support: Providing affordable land, shared equipment, and resources to help farming and ranching communities succeed.
• Community Well-Being: Offering opportunities for local food production, promoting access to open spaces, and enhancing community connectivity.

Initiatives

One of the organization's key initiatives is the development of a "Flex Farm" in Whitefish, Montana. This project involves converting donated land into flexible farm plots for both new and existing farmers, complete with shared infrastructure like power, water, irrigation, and storage facilities. Save Farmland also plans to collaborate with local nonprofits to support food access programs and community development projects.

Fundraising Model

Save Farmland's financing model is designed so that 100% of public donations directly support land conservation and community programs. Operating expenses are covered by a small group of private donors, ensuring that all public donations benefit the mission directly.
