Service dogs for mental health: transforming lives, providing hope, and saving lives. Our lifesaving difference is the focus on individuals who have exhibited mental health challenges, such as self-harming tendencies, PTSD, and contemplated suicide. The mission of SDSL is to educate and generate the funds to pay for highly trained service given free of charge to veterans, first responders, and others. Service Dogs Saving Lives was established after the loss of our son, Joseph, by suicide. The inspiration for SDSL started in 2010 while doing volunteer work through the SMGA. Witnessing wounded veterans coming off the transport bus with their service dogs at a Maryland golf course provided the first-hand evidence needed to fuel our desire to help others suffering from mental and physical pain. Witnessing this life-changing bond of independence and hope was transformative.
