Alpine Garden Society
The Alpine Garden Society (charity number 207478) is a UK-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to the cultivation, conservation, and study of alpine and rock garden plants. Founded in 1929, it promotes horticultural practices for growing small hardy herbaceous plants, particularly those adapted to mountainous environments[2][4].

History

The society originated from a proposal by Sir William Lawrence, then treasurer of the Royal Horticultural Society, who suggested creating a "rock garden society" in June 1929. The first general meeting on 10 December 1929 formalized its current name, emphasizing alpine plant cultivation. Founding members included Dorothy Renton and her husband, with Lawrence serving as inaugural president[4].

Its inaugural plant show occurred on 5 April 1930, establishing a tradition of competitive exhibitions featuring awards such as the Sewell Medal and Farrer Memorial Medal (introduced in 1931). Non-competitive displays were added in 1931[4]. Early activities included funding plant-collecting expeditions, often through member contributions in exchange for collected specimens. Organized member tours began in 1933 with a trip to Snowdonia, continuing today under conservation-focused guidelines prohibiting wild collection[4].

Activities

The society operates as a membership organisation, offering resources including a quarterly journal (The Alpine Gardener), a seed exchange service, and horticultural study grants[3][4]. It maintains a garden at Pershore, Worcestershire, demonstrating cultivation techniques across rockeries, tufa setups, scree beds, and alpine houses[5]. Volunteers maintain the garden, which showcases both common and rare species suited to diverse growing conditions[5].

Conservation

With an emphasis on habitat preservation, the society supports conservation initiatives and botanical research[3][4]. It collaborates on educational projects, including planting demonstrations and open garden days[5]. Financial records for 2023 report £411,493 income and £608,870 expenditure[3], reflecting investments in programming and membership services.

Governance

No trustees receive remuneration for their roles, and the charity relies on 250 volunteers alongside seven trustees[3]. It operates subsidiary trading entities without trustee financial benefits[3].
