Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation
Introduction
The Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation is a UK nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting Liberal Judaism in Leicester. Established in 1950, it initially operated as the Liberal Jewish Group, affiliating with the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues, now known as Liberal Judaism[1][4].
History
In 1950, a small group of Leicester Jews sought an alternative to Orthodox Judaism, leading to the formation of the Liberal Jewish Group. In the 1960s, the name was changed to the Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation. During this period, services were held bi-weekly at the Friends Meeting House[1]. The congregation later merged with members from the Leicester Reform Group when that congregation closed in 1976[4].
Building and Accessibility
The congregation purchased its current building, which dates back to 1885, in 1995. Originally used as a school, the building was refurbished to serve as a synagogue. It features wheelchair accessibility and a loop system for the hard of hearing, ensuring inclusivity for all members[1][2].
Philosophy and Practices
The Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation adheres to the principles of Liberal Judaism, prioritizing truth over tradition and sincerity over conformity. The congregation supports gender equality and encourages children to participate actively in services. It also engages in dialogue with other religious and cultural groups, promoting pluralism and community involvement[1].
Community Engagement
As an active participant in Leicester's multi-faith community, the congregation is represented on the Leicester Council of Faiths and supports asylum seekers and refugees through its involvement in the Leicester Faith Support Group[1]. This engagement reflects its commitment to social action and interfaith dialogue.
Charity Details
The congregation is registered as a charity under number 238867, contributing to its role as a significant nonprofit organization in the UK Jewish community.
Conclusion
The Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation serves as a vital part of Leicester's Jewish community, offering a blend of traditional and modern interpretations of Jewish practice while fostering community outreach and inclusivity.
