Mersey Kidney Research

History

The charity was originally founded in 1964 by Mr. Jack Pearson, Mr. Jim Cosbie Ross, and Dr. H.J. Goldsmith under the name Mersey Regional Association for Kidney Research. This was later shortened to Mersey Kidney Research. At one point, the charity was known as Mersey Kidney First, a title under which it played a pioneering role in establishing Liverpool as a leader in the practice of home dialysis. In 2019, the charity was renamed Kidney Research Northwest, reflecting its regional remit and research focus.

Mission and Activities

The principal objective of Mersey Kidney Research is to undertake, promote, develop, and encourage research into kidney diseases and urinary tract disorders, including their treatments. The charity funds current research in several departments, including Organ Transplantation, Urology, and Nephrology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. It also supports related research activities within the University of Liverpool.

The charity is a non-government-funded organization that relies entirely on donations from the public, including fundraising events, general and in memoriam donations, corporate giving, and legacies. Volunteer fundraisers play a key role in sustaining its activities, organizing annual events such as balls and concerts to raise funds.

Location and Operations

Mersey Kidney Research's office is located within the University of Liverpool’s Cancer Research Centre, where much of its supported research is conducted.

Community Engagement

The organization actively seeks to engage volunteers to join its Fundraisers’ Focus Group to help expand its fundraising efforts and awareness campaigns.
