The Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund

The Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund (ACTF) is a UK-based charity established in 1974, following the amalgamation of the Society for Analytical Chemistry (SAC) with the Chemical Society (CS), which later became the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)[3]. It is registered under Charity Number 268893[5].

Objectives

The primary objective of the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund is to promote, assist, and extend the science and study of Analytical Chemistry. This includes supporting the analysis, nature, and composition of both natural and manufactured materials for the benefit of the public[3][5].

Governance

The Trust is governed by a board of trustees who meet regularly to manage financial budgets, assess funding applications, and develop strategies to meet its objectives. Trustees are typically current or former members of the RSC's Analytical Science Community Council, ensuring they have a strong background and involvement in the field of analytical chemistry[3][5].

Funding Activities

The ACTF provides various funding opportunities to support research, education, and community engagement in analytical chemistry. These include:

  • Low-Middle Economy Scholarships: Aimed at assisting citizens from low-middle economy countries to visit scientific institutions in the UK or Republic of Ireland (RoI)[1].
  • Outreach Scholarships: Offering opportunities for UK or RoI analytical scientists to visit host institutions in low-middle economy countries, facilitating knowledge dissemination[1].
  • Analytical Chemistry Summer Studentships: Providing financial support for undergraduate students to engage in summer studentships in the UK or RoI, enhancing their analytical science skills[1].
  • Study Leave Grants: Supporting individuals from university, industrial, or public service sectors to visit host institutes for acquiring new analytical science knowledge or training methods[1].
  • Overseas Conference Travel Grants: Assisting postgraduate PhD students to attend and participate in international scientific conferences related to analytical research[1].
  • ACTF/CAM Fellowships: Designed to support early-career analytical chemists in establishing their independent research identities at higher education institutions in the UK or Ireland[1].

Relationship with the Royal Society of Chemistry

The ACTF works closely with the RSC's Analytical Science Community, coordinating activities such as the Schools Analyst Competition with funding from the Trust[2][3]. This collaboration underscores its commitment to promoting analytical chemistry education and research.
