Southern Counties Historic Vehicles Preservation Trust

The Southern Counties Historic Vehicles Preservation Trust (SCHVPT) is a United Kingdom-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to the preservation, maintenance, and exhibition of historic vehicles and machinery. Founded originally as the Worthing & Southern Counties Historic Vehicle Group in 1962, the trust was incorporated in 1978 to formalise its activities and expand its mission across the southern counties of England. The trust was established to encourage the preservation and exhibition of steam traction engines, historic vehicles, stationary engines, and other associated equipment. Its overarching aim is to educate and train the general public in the care and upkeep of vintage vehicles, whether motor-driven or steam-powered, fostering appreciation and knowledge of historic mechanical heritage.

Facilities and Activities

The SCHVPT owns and operates a dedicated Trust Centre, which includes a rally field, barn/workshop, and two meeting rooms. These facilities serve as venues for maintaining and restoring the trust’s collection of historic vehicles and equipment, as well as hosting events and gatherings. The Trust Centre is also made available for hire to like-minded clubs and organisations.

The trust organises a variety of events throughout the year, including regular meetings, rallies, and member gatherings. These events take place both at the Trust Centre and at external locations such as Duxford Museum, Milestones Museum, and Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens. Notable annual activities include a 'fish and chip' evening to mark the start of the rally season, a road run in April celebrating National Drive It Day, and a 'hog roast' in September.

A core part of the trust’s mission is to educate the public about vintage vehicles and associated machinery. Through its events and outreach, the SCHVPT promotes practical skills in the restoration and operation of historic vehicles, aiming to preserve these important cultural assets for future generations.
