Chichester Harbour and Selsey Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps

The Chichester Harbour and Selsey Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps is a UK-based nonprofit youth organisation affiliated with the Sea Cadet Corps, a national maritime youth charity sponsored by the Royal Navy. It operates as a local unit within this wider organisation, delivering nautical and leadership training to young people in the Chichester Harbour and Selsey areas.

Background

The Sea Cadet Corps, established in 1856, is the United Kingdom's largest maritime youth charity with approximately 14,000 cadets across over 400 units nationwide. It offers members aged 10 to 18 years opportunities to learn life skills, including leadership, teamwork, and maritime navigation, through both onshore and offshore activities, often leading to recognised qualifications[1][2][3]. The Chichester Harbour and Selsey Unit is a community-level manifestation of this mission, providing structured training and experiences grounded in the ethos and rank structure of the Royal Navy.

Charitable Status

This unit is registered as a charity in England and Wales with the charity number 279348. It operates under the broader governance of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets, the umbrella organisation created in 2004 that oversees the Sea Cadet Corps and other seafarers' educational charities across the UK[5].

Activities and Training

Cadets in the Chichester Harbour and Selsey Unit participate in a range of activities designed to develop nautical skills, physical fitness, and personal development. Under the guidance of volunteer instructors, cadets engage in sailing, rowing, canoeing, and other water-based adventures as well as classroom learning and leadership exercises[4]. They have access to training boats and equipment, with possible opportunities to earn Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications and other recognised certifications through their participation.

Community Role

The unit serves local youth by providing an alternative avenue for education and personal growth outside of the traditional school environment, fostering discipline, confidence, and teamwork through maritime-themed challenge and adventure. It contributes to the Sea Cadet Corps’ wider aim of preparing young people for life with a foundation in nautical skills and leadership.

This concise summary captures the role and function of the Chichester Harbour and Selsey Unit within the Sea Cadet Corps framework and its contribution to youth development in the UK maritime charity sector.
