THE BRITISH OVERSEAS RAILWAYS HISTORICAL TRUST

British Overseas Railways Historical Trust

BORHT was formed in 1984 to bring to the public attention the way that Britain exported railways and railway equipment to virtually every country in the world. It ensures the preservation of items of outstanding historical merit, and promotes the study of the history of railways in the Commonwealth outside the UK, and of the British contribution to railways in other parts of the world.

The British Overseas Railways Historical Trust

Introduction

The British Overseas Railways Historical Trust (BORHT) is a UK-based nonprofit organisation formed in 1984. Its primary mission is to highlight Britain's role in exporting railways and railway equipment to countries worldwide, serving as an example for modern engineers, industrialists, and businessmen[1][3].

History and Purpose

Established in 1984, BORHT aims to raise public awareness of the historical significance of British railway exports. This initiative not only underscores Britain's engineering prowess but also provides a historical reference point for contemporary professionals in the field[1][3]. By focusing on the development and spread of railways globally, BORHT offers insights into the economic and technological impacts of these exports.

Activities and Publications

BORHT is involved in publishing materials that cover the history of railways and their development. These publications are designed for enthusiasts and offer a detailed look at how early railways were established and grew, initially as common carriers[2]. Through these efforts, BORHT supports education and historical preservation in the field of railway history.

Role and Impact

As a historical society, BORHT contributes to the broader understanding of Britain's influence on global railway systems. By documenting and sharing this history, it supports educational efforts and maintains a cultural link between historical achievements and modern industrial practices.
