Dean Archaeological Group

The Dean Archaeological Group (DAG) is a UK-based nonprofit organisation and registered charity (Charity number: 800770) dedicated to the study and promotion of archaeology, primarily within the Forest of Dean and its surrounding areas. Founded as an entirely voluntary group, DAG is composed of enthusiastic amateur archaeologists of all ages and backgrounds who share an interest in both prehistoric and historical archaeology.

Mission and Activities

DAG's primary aim is to encourage and promote the understanding of archaeology through practical, hands-on fieldwork and educational activities. The group actively engages in archaeological research, site surveying, excavation, recording, and the processing of finds. It is committed to maintaining professional standards in all its activities, despite its amateur status, and welcomes members without formal archaeological training—only enthusiasm and a desire to learn are required.

Beyond excavation, the group participates in a wide range of archaeological activities including surveying, photographing, and recording sites, making the hobby accessible to individuals regardless of age or physical ability. DAG also organizes talks and presentations to promote archaeology to the wider community and often has a presence at local events in the Forest of Dean.

Collaborations and Projects

Over its existence, DAG has established close working relationships with several local and regional organisations including The Dean Heritage Centre, Gloucester Archaeology, The Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire County Council Archaeology Services, Monmouth Archaeology, and the Forest of Dean Local History Society.

One of the notable projects involving DAG is participation in the Full Archaeological Survey of the Forest of Dean, a comprehensive investigation coordinated by Gloucestershire Archaeological Service with funding from English Heritage, The Countryside Agency, and the County Council. This project includes desk-based research and innovative field surveys aimed at uncovering archaeological sites in woodland areas. DAG provides ongoing training in landscape archaeology, surveying techniques, geophysics, and excavation to support its growing membership and contribute effectively to this project.

Membership and Meetings

The group prides itself on an informal and friendly atmosphere, facilitating a wide age range of interests. Meetings are held monthly (except December) at the White Horse Inn in Soudley, Forest of Dean. These gatherings provide a welcoming space for members and newcomers alike to share knowledge, plan activities, and foster a community around local archaeology.

Educational Purpose

Formally, the Dean Archaeological Group is established to advance education for the benefit of the public through the study of archaeology, with a particular focus on the archaeology of the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas. Its educational remit includes not only fieldwork but also dissemination of knowledge through publications and public talks.

The Dean Archaeological Group exemplifies community-driven archaeology, making the study of local heritage accessible and engaging while contributing valuable research and preservation efforts in the Forest of Dean region.

Welcome The Dean Archaeological Group or DAG as we are commonly known encourages and promotes the understanding of archaeology in the Forest of Dean and neighbouring areas. Our aim is to practice field archaeology and we take every opportunity to research survey excavate and record sites. DAG is an amateur organisation that aspires to meet professional standards across all of its activities but that does not mean that you need an archaeological background to join us. All you require is enthusiasm and a desire to learn about archaeology in or out of the trenches.
