The organisation was founded by a group of tree enthusiasts responding to a petition to save old oaks in the Wyre Forest, which drew media attention and support from notable figures like Norman Hickin and David Bellamy. Their initial gathering took place near a grand old oak in Hawkbatch Farm, Bewdley, marking the beginning of their journey. The charity's first tree planting occurred at Hawkbatch, followed by planting projects both locally and further afield[3].

In 1994, Tree Spirit acquired 24 acres of land known as Maes Y Mynach near Oswestry. This site, formerly a Sitka spruce plantation, was clear-felled and subsequently replanted with mixed broadleaf trees by the charity's volunteers. A notable feature of this site is a timber roundhouse built using leftover Sitka timber[3].
