The Wigton Choral Society

The Wigton Choral Society is a nonprofit organisation based in the United Kingdom. With over fifty years of history, the society has established itself with a reputation for high-quality performances and innovative programming.

Background

The organization was originally founded with the dual objectives of participating in the Cumberland Rural Choirs Festival (now known as Cumbria Rural Choirs or Cumbria Singers) and entering music competitions. Early success included winning two cups at the Carlisle Music Festival within its first year. In 1977, under the direction of Hugh Davies, the choir embarked on its first independent concert, performing Christmas music at St. Mary’s Church, Wigton[1][4].

Structure and Activities

The choir currently comprises approximately fifty to fifty-five mixed voices, offering a diverse repertoire spanning from the 15th to the 21st centuries. It typically hosts two major concerts annually: one in December and another in June, both commonly held at St. Mary’s Church, Wigton. The society has also been an integral part of Cumbria Rural Choirs, contributing to large-scale choral performances each spring alongside professional orchestras, soloists, and conductors[1][4].

Modern Developments

As of January 2008, Ian Wright serves as the Musical Director, leading the choir in various musical ventures. Recent projects include co-commissioning new works, such as "A Season to Sing" by Joanna Forbes L'Estrange, to celebrate significant anniversaries[2]. Their annual concerts often feature renowned works, including Bob Chilcott’s compositions and classic Christmas carols[2].

Charity Objectives

The Wigton Choral Society is registered with the Charity Commission under the number 1037114. Its primary charitable objective is to promote, improve, develop, and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music[3].
