Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust
The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust is a United Kingdom-based nonprofit organisation established in 1997 with the primary objective of advancing public education and fostering appreciation of the art and science of music. The Trust predominantly supports music education and live classical music performance, focusing on activities within the geographical and historical boundaries of Surrey, England[2][4][5].
History and Background
The Trust was founded following the death of its benefactor, Humphrey Richardson Taylor, who lived in Cheam, Surrey and was devoted to music throughout his life. Mr. Taylor sought to encourage the growth of music-making and live performance among people of all ages[2].
Objectives
The Trust aims at promoting the advancement of public education in music and allied performing arts. It supports a variety of music-related activities and live classical music performances, primarily supporting local amateur music societies and educational institutions[2][4][5].
Activities and Support Provided
The Trust provides financial support to:
- Schools: Funding for music-related capital projects, purchase of instruments, music computers and software, concerts for special occasions, and part-funding of instrumental tuition[2].
- Musical Societies and Organisations: Annual grants towards the costs of live classical concerts, competitions, amateur concerts, and classical music festivals mainly in Surrey[1][2].
- Individuals: Scholarships and grants for young and gifted musicians, particularly those residing in Surrey or with strong connections to the area. Funding includes support for undergraduate and postgraduate music studies, tuition fees, and purchase of instruments. The Trust focuses on children and young adults with exceptional musical talent intending to pursue careers in music. Maintenance grants are awarded only in exceptional cases. Funding for courses at foreign universities is excluded[2][3].
Application Process
Applications for grants must include detailed information about the organisation or individual and the intended use of funds. Each application is evaluated on its own merits, and the Trustees’ decision is final. The Trust encourages detailed explanations for specific funding requests, such as instrument purchases, including justification for new versus second-hand instruments[1][2][3].
Partnerships
The Trust collaborates with prestigious institutions such as the Royal College of Music and the University of Surrey, extending support beyond Surrey to musically gifted British residents through these partnerships[2].
Governance and Financials
As of the latest information, the Trust has 5 trustees and employs 2 staff members. It balances charitable spending on current beneficiaries with retaining resources for future beneficiaries. The charitable expenditure has included support for music education and amateur performances, reflecting its mission to promote public education and appreciation of music[5].
The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust continues to play a vital role in nurturing musical talent and supporting the performance arts within its core community, contributing to the cultural enrichment of Surrey and beyond.
