Popis

Action for Animals (charity number 1068487) is a UK-registered nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals through spaying, neutering, vaccinating, feeding, and providing ongoing care, particularly focusing on feral animal populations and pets of financially disadvantaged owners. Established in 1997 by Nina Cordoray Downes, the charity supports animal projects both within the UK and internationally, with a notable presence in Spain where it operates a charity shop in the Andalusian village of Competa[1].

History

Action for Animals was founded in 1997 as a UK-registered charity with a mission to prevent animal cruelty and improve the wellbeing of animals through practical intervention. Over time, it expanded its activities to include international support, particularly community animal projects in Spain. The founder, Nina Cordoray Downes, was instrumental in shaping the organization’s focus on accessible veterinary care and neutering programs[1].

Mission and Activities

The charity’s core mission involves spaying, neutering, and vaccinating animals to control and reduce feral animal populations humanely. It also provides food and ongoing medical support for these populations. Additionally, Action for Animals offers free or subsidized neutering services to pets owned by people who cannot afford these procedures. Financial assistance for veterinary care is extended to low-income pet owners to prevent unnecessary suffering or euthanasia caused by economic hardship[1][2].

Key activities include:

  • Spay and neuter programs aimed at population control
  • Vaccinations and medical care for feral and domestic animals
  • Feeding programs for feral cats
  • Financial aid for veterinary bills for pet owners in need
  • Supporting animal welfare projects in the UK and abroad[2]

Operations

In Spain, the charity operates a shop that helps raise funds to support ongoing projects. The shop is located in Competa and is open several days a week. Donations of goods for sale are encouraged from the public to help sustain their activities and make a difference in local animal welfare[1].

Recognition and Regulation

Action for Animals is registered with the UK Charity Commission under charity number 1068487. Its activities are subject to regulatory oversight to ensure compliance with charity laws and effective use of funds towards animal welfare[2].
