Avert

Avert was a UK-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting health literacy on HIV and sexual health through digital communications. Founded in 1986, the charity focused on providing accessible, accurate, and actionable content to support informed sexual health choices and contribute to global efforts to end AIDS[1][4].

Mission and Activities

Avert's mission was centered on empowering people through knowledge. Over its nearly four decades of operation, it developed a strong reputation as a trusted provider of HIV and sexual health information. The organisation supported local communities in the UK, Asia, and Africa by funding key HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Avert's work also included sponsoring medical research that was often overlooked by others[1].

In its latter years, Avert's efforts shifted primarily to digital communications, engaging millions of individuals and health practitioners annually through its brands, including Avert.org, Be in the KNOW, and Boost. These initiatives aimed to increase knowledge, skills, and confidence in addressing HIV and sexual health[1].

Partnerships and Legacy

Avert worked closely with various partners to ensure the continuity of its mission. In line with its transition strategy, announced in November 2023, Avert's core brands were transferred to African-led organisations, such as OPHID, LVCT Health, and Kenya Comms Hub, by the end of 2024. This strategic move aimed to maintain and expand Avert’s legacy by placing its programs under local leadership[1][2].

Financial Overview

Avert's financial reports for the year ending March 2024 showed a total income of £361,394 and a total expenditure of £864,748[4]. The charity did not have any trading subsidiaries, and no trustees received remuneration or benefits from the charity[4].

Closure and Finalisation

Following the successful transition of its programs, Avert ceased its operational activities by the end of 2024. The official process of charity closure is expected to be finalised by November 2025[1][2].
