Association of English Singers and Speakers

The Association of English Singers and Speakers (AESS) is a UK-based nonprofit organisation focused on promoting the interpretation and performance of the English language, both in song and speech, to the highest artistic standards. Established as a registered charity (charity number 1106279), the organisation supports education and cultivation in the arts and science of English communication in music and speech.

Mission and Activities

The AESS is dedicated to encouraging clear and imaginative English expression through various educational and performance activities. It aims to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of English language performance in classical music and drama contexts. The association organises a series of unique annual competitions designed to foster young talent among classical singers, accompanists, composers, and actors. These competitions provide emerging artists with opportunities to explore and perform English song and poetry, promoting excellence in diction, interpretation, and communication.

Competitions and Events

Each year, the AESS hosts five distinct competitions targeting different aspects of English-language performance. These include:

• Competitions for young classical singers, accompanists, and composers.
• A competition for actors focusing on the expressive use of English speech.

Beyond competitions, the AESS also organises events to enrich the community experience, including:

• Unsung Heroes, which highlights neglected or forgotten English song repertoire, offering members and their students the chance to perform collaboratively.
• Prize Winners Concert, showcasing the winners of the organisation's first-place awards, providing a platform to hear the emerging talents of tomorrow.
• The Annual General Meeting (AGM), which combines formal organisational business with social opportunities featuring entertainment and guest speakers.

Membership

Membership to the AESS is open to individuals who support its goals, with fees structured to encourage participation from students and professionals alike. Members benefit from opportunities to participate in competitions, attend special events, and engage with a community devoted to the arts of English singing and speaking.

Leadership

The organisation was chaired by Sarah Leonard MBE until her passing in 2024. Under her leadership, the AESS continued to build its reputation as a respected and influential society promoting high standards of English vocal performance.
