The Kenya Trust

The Kenya Trust is a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity number 1105495) established with the primary objective of supporting the work of The Salvation Army in Kenya. Founded in 2003, the Trust officially attained charitable status in 2004 and has since focused on improving the educational and social welfare infrastructure associated with The Salvation Army's initiatives in Kenya.

History

The Kenya Trust began operations in 2003 and quickly formalized its charitable status the following year. Over its history, the Trust has celebrated key milestones, including marking 20 years on the register of charities in August 2024. This milestone underscored two decades of commitment to its mission of enhancing the lives of communities in Kenya through targeted support of Salvation Army projects.

Objectives

The aims of The Kenya Trust are twofold:

• To assist in improving conditions and facilities at Salvation Army schools, hostels, and community centres throughout Kenya.
• To promote and support the development of music ministry within The Salvation Army in Kenya.

These goals focus on both infrastructural development and cultural enrichment, addressing a range of needs from educational facilities to social and spiritual empowerment.

Activities and Impact

The Trust has successfully raised over £650,000 since 2004, which has been directed towards its mission of supporting the growth of the music ministry and the broader social work of The Salvation Army within Kenya. The Trust channels funds to projects such as the Chekombero Special Primary School for the Deaf near Mudete, western Kenya, which serves both day and boarding pupils. Efforts there have included constructing new classrooms for Early Child Development, building latrine blocks, and maintaining existing infrastructure.

The Kenya Trust also conducts appeals for specific needs; for example, its Christmas 2023 campaign requested funding for 25 bunk beds and 50 mattresses for its supported schools, which was successfully met.

The Kenya Trust relies primarily on donations and fundraising efforts within the United Kingdom and internationally. The charity expresses gratitude for the ongoing support it receives from donors which enables the continuation and expansion of its support work in Kenya.

Governance

As a registered charity, The Kenya Trust operates under the regulations and oversight of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, ensuring compliance with standards for transparency, governance, and fiduciary responsibility.

The Kenya Trust remains dedicated to alleviating poverty-related constraints on education and social care in Kenya, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children with special needs, through sustained support of Salvation Army projects.
