The Barristers' Benevolent Association

The Barristers' Benevolent Association (BBA) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing support to past and present practicing members of the Bar in England and Wales, including the judiciary, as well as their families and dependents who are in need, distress, or facing difficulties.

History

The BBA was founded on January 10, 1873, and has been actively involved in helping barristers across every circuit. Over the years, it has evolved to meet the changing needs of its beneficiaries. The organization was incorporated as a charitable company limited by guarantee in England and Wales on November 11, 2004, and it gained charitable status shortly after, with a registration number of 1106768[2].

Mission and Vision

The mission of the BBA is to support, help, and comfort members of the Bar who are facing financial hardship or personal challenges. It seeks to be a last safety net for those without income, capital, or family support, often saving not only dignity but also careers[3].

Activities and Support

The BBA offers various forms of assistance, including grants for specific expenses such as TV licenses, car tax, telephone bills, and essential medical equipment not covered by the NHS. While it generally does not cover school fees, exceptions are made in compelling circumstances, such as when a student is nearing an important examination[2].

The organization relies on fundraising efforts and donations from Chambers and individual barristers to maintain its operations. It engages in outreach activities, including attending conferences and maintaining a strong online presence to ensure that all practicing barristers are aware of the support available[2].

Governance and Structure

The BBA operates under a Memorandum of Association, which outlines its objects and powers as a charitable company. It is governed by its Articles of Association and boasts a dedicated team, including volunteer Circuit Representatives who help publicize its work locally[2].

Annual Review and Operations

Each year, the BBA publishes an Annual Review that highlights its work and impact. Despite challenges, such as fluctuations in donations and market conditions, the BBA continues to provide crucial financial assistance and guidance to barristers in need[3].
