Oldham Symphony Orchestra

Oldham Symphony Orchestra is a nonprofit amateur orchestra based in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It was founded in 1963 by two local musicians, Thomas Whittaker and Peter Scott, originally under the name Oldham Amateur Orchestra. The ensemble adopted its current name in 1968 to reflect a shift toward performing more adventurous musical repertoire. The orchestra primarily consists of amateur musicians of varying ages and abilities from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared passion for classical music performance.

History and Mission

The orchestra’s founding purpose was to provide a forum for musicians in the Oldham area to rehearse and perform together, fostering a community for those passionate about orchestral music. It performs three concerts annually in the Oldham area, featuring a broad and diverse repertoire. The orchestra has performed over 350 pieces by more than 200 composers, ranging from widely known classical favorites to more obscure and challenging works.

The ensemble also supports local musical talent by offering performance opportunities to emerging soloists, including finalists from the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. It serves an important community role by providing school leavers and adult amateur musicians with continued opportunities for musical engagement and development.
