Sheffield and Balby Area Quaker Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends
The Sheffield and Balby Area Quaker Meeting is a part of the Religious Society of Friends, a charitable organization registered in the UK with the charity number 1134536. This area meeting encompasses a collection of local Quaker communities in the region, including Sheffield Central and others, working together under a unified organizational structure.
History
Quakerism in the region dates back to the mid-17th century, a time marked by significant religious and societal upheaval following the English Civil War. The earliest recorded Quaker meetings in this area include one at Balby, near Doncaster, where George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, preached. This meeting is one of the oldest continuous Quaker meetings, beginning around 1652[1][5].
In Sheffield, Quaker meetings have been held since 1668, indicating a rapid spread of Quaker beliefs across the North of England[5]. The current Sheffield Meeting House was built in 1989, while an earlier Meeting House, now unused, is located nearby[1].
Structure and Activities
The Sheffield and Balby Area Meeting includes four local meetings, each with its own community and activities. These meetings are closely linked and share various events and initiatives throughout the year. The area meeting serves as a coordinating body for Quakers in the region, facilitating collaboration and mutual support among its member meetings[2].
The Quaker meetings in this area uphold the core principles of the Religious Society of Friends, emphasizing peace, equality, and community service. They continue to play an active role in promoting social justice and peace, aligning with the historical tradition of Quaker activism.
Historical Significance
The area meeting is deeply rooted in Quaker history and continues to celebrate its heritage. The grave of notable Quaker abolitionist John Woolman, though not located in this area, is often mentioned in the context of broader Quaker history and values[5]. The organization's historical significance is also reflected in the preservation and continuation of Quaker practices and values over centuries.
Overall, the Sheffield and Balby Area Quaker Meeting remains a vibrant part of the Quaker community in the UK, fostering spiritual growth and community service among its members.

Welcome We are a large vibrant Quaker Meeting based in a fully accessible city centre building. Every Sunday our building is wellused with adults and children coming to Quaker worship. We use different parts of the building for creative activities childrens gatherings as office space or meeting rooms and for shared meals and community events. At a Quaker meeting people sit quietly together.
