Queens Road Baptist Church is a Baptist church and registered charity (charity number 1127882) located in the city centre of Coventry, England. The church is housed in a Grade II listed building, recognized for its architectural and historic significance. It serves as a prominent place of worship and community engagement within Coventry.

History

The roots of Queens Road Baptist Church can be traced back to 1643, originating from a desire among members of the two parish churches in Coventry for a more biblically focused style of worship. This led to the formation of a "Baptized Church of Christ" that emphasized believer's baptism.

The first dedicated church building for the congregation was constructed in 1723. Prior to that, meetings were held in private homes. Under the ministry of John Butterworth (1753–1803), the church grew and later moved to larger premises in Cow Lane.

In 1884, the church relocated to its current building on Queens Road. This building was commissioned in 1882 and constructed by local builder John Worwood, a church deacon who owned a carpentry and building business.

Throughout the 20th century, the church was shaped by influential ministers who emphasized social justice and community involvement. In 1931, Howard Ingli James became minister and was known for his political activism and conscientious objection to war, which influenced many church members. During the 1970s, Richard Hamper, JP, focused on youth inclusion and social justice efforts without prejudice.

Later ministers, including David Spriggs and Grenville Overton, expanded evangelical programs and oversaw refurbishment and extensions to the building in the 1980s and 2000s, further strengthening the church’s role in the local faith community.

Worship and Activities

Queens Road Baptist Church holds weekly worship services every Sunday at 10:30 am, available both in-person and online. The church provides a range of activities for different age groups and interests, fostering community and spiritual growth. It supports mission partners locally and internationally, reflecting its commitment to wider Christian outreach.
