Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust
The Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust is a UK-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of the original 1907 experimental Scouting camp held on Brownsea Island. Registered as a charity (number 1146810), the Trust focuses on providing facilities and educational resources to enable the public to learn about the historic camp that sparked the worldwide Scout and Guide movements[3].
Historical Background
Brownsea Island, located in Poole Harbour, England, is famously known as the site of Robert Baden-Powell's pioneering 1907 Scout camp. This camp, held from 1 to 8 August 1907, was an experimental summer camp where Baden-Powell tested ideas that he later published in Scouting for Boys. The camp brought together boys from various social backgrounds to engage in activities including camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving, and patriotism. This experiment laid the foundation for the global Scouting movement[1][5].
Following the initial camp, Brownsea Island continued to be associated with Scouting history. Boy Scouts camped there until the early 1930s, and in 1964, 50 acres near the original campsite were designated as a conservation area for Scout and Guide camping. The island later hosted a Scout Jamboree in 1973, drawing hundreds of participants. On 1 August 2007, the centenary of the first camp was commemorated with multiple Scout camps and a Sunrise Ceremony, celebrating 100 years of Scouting heritage on Brownsea Island[1].
Purpose and Activities
The Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust manages efforts to preserve the site as both a heritage and educational resource. The Trust maintains the historical significance of the island’s Scouting connections and facilitates public access to this landmark through interpretive programs and heritage projects. Its mission centers on ensuring that the legacy of the 1907 camp remains accessible and engaging for future generations[3].
Location and Conservation
Brownsea Island is owned by the National Trust and recognized for its natural and historical importance. Part of the island is maintained as a Scout and Guide campsite, reflecting its continuing role in youth development and outdoor education. The island's environment is carefully conserved to balance its rich history with ecological preservation[1][4].
In summary, the Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust is a dedicated steward of one of Scouting’s most iconic sites. By preserving the original camp’s heritage and facilitating education, the Trust plays a vital role in celebrating and sustaining the ongoing legacy of Scouting and Guiding in the UK and worldwide.

Shopping Cart Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour has rightly earned the title of The Birthplace of Scouting and Guiding as it was there in 1907 that Robert BadenPowell held his experimental camp when the seeds of the Scout Movement were sown. But it was not until the 1960s that the island was opened to the public by the National Trust and Scouts and Guides were once more welcomed to their historic home. Today Scouts and Guides from every corner of the World visit the modern Outdoor and Activities Centre and are able to camp on the site that marks the place where in 1907 BadenPowell camped with twenty boys more than a hundred years ago. Brownsea Island Trading Post sells bespoke Brownsea Island merchandise woggles neckerchiefs and cloth badges for the Beavers Cubs Scouts Rainbows Brownies and Guides from the official Scout and Guide outlet on Brownsea Island.
