Mansfield Fire Station Preservation Society Trust

The Mansfield Fire Station Preservation Society Trust is a UK nonprofit organization with the charity number 1154721. The Trust was established to preserve the history of firefighting and to advance public education through its museum. It operates the Mansfield Fire Museum, which is located in the former Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade Training School at the rear of Mansfield Fire Station.

History

The precursor to the Trust, the Mansfield Fire Preservation Society, was formed in November 1983. This group aimed to collect and exhibit fire service memorabilia. Over the years, the organization evolved, and in 1995, its premises were refurbished to temporarily serve as a fire station while the original station was rebuilt. After the new station was completed, the premises were converted into the museum that exists today.

Mission and Activities

The Mansfield Fire Station Preservation Society Trust is dedicated to educating the public about the history of firefighting. The museum hosts various exhibits and educational programs, including a Kidz Zone that teaches children about fire safety and historical events such as the Great Fire of London. Additionally, the museum explores the broad history of firefighting, with a focus on both British and international firefighting practices, including World War II narratives.

Museum and Outreach

The museum features several sections, including the British Room, which showcases fire service memorabilia and historical items from the UK, and the Overseas Room, which highlights a collection of helmets, uniforms, and other firefighting equipment from around the world. While the museum operates on an appointment-only basis and relies on volunteers, it also offers outreach programs where museum staff can visit schools, clubs, or other groups.

Operations and Funding

The museum is supported by donations, and visitors are encouraged to make a minimum contribution. All operations are managed by volunteers, reflecting the organization's commitment to community engagement and historical preservation without substantial government funding.
