RHONDDA TUNNEL SOCIETY

Rhondda Tunnel Society – Reconnecting the Rhondda & Afan Valley

Our overriding aim is to improve the economic prospects and social benefits for the Upper Valleys by encouraging visitors, principally by re-opening the Rhondda Tunnel to become the world's longest continually-open cycling & walking tunnel. Most of our income comes from subscriptions, and it is aimed at developing proposals and lobbying for grants to make this project happen.

Rhondda Tunnel Society

The Rhondda Tunnel Society is a UK nonprofit organisation, registered under charity number 1162646. The society was formed in September 2014 with a primary goal of promoting awareness and preserving the historical significance of the Rhondda Tunnel, an abandoned railway tunnel connecting the Rhondda and Afan Valleys in South Wales.

Purpose

The main objective of the society is to highlight the importance of the Rhondda Tunnel, which was a crucial infrastructure in its time for transporting coal and minerals from the upper Rhondda Valley to ports for export. The tunnel, completed in 1890, played a significant role in the industrial activities of the region before its closure in 1970 due to safety concerns.

Activities

The society engages in various activities aimed at preserving and promoting the tunnel's historical value. It has been involved in surveys and discussions about reopening the tunnel as a cycleway, which would not only preserve the tunnel but also create a recreational resource for the community. This proposal reflects the society's broader mission of fostering community engagement and local economic development through the preservation and repurposing of historical infrastructure.

Historical Context

The Rhondda Tunnel, constructed by the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway, was a significant engineering feat for its time. Its construction aimed to break the monopoly of the Taff Vale Railway in coal transportation, allowing coal from the Rhondda Valleys to be directly exported via Swansea docks. The tunnel's history reflects the industrial and economic dynamics of South Wales during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Rhondda Tunnel Society contributes to the cultural heritage of South Wales by advocating for the preservation of such historical landmarks and promoting sustainable reuse of abandoned infrastructure for community benefit.
