Talita Kum School Fund

The Talita Kum School Fund is a United Kingdom registered charity (charity number 1172220) dedicated to raising funds for the Talita Kum School located in Colombia, South America. The school provides education and support for disadvantaged and disabled children who would otherwise lack access to appropriate schooling[1][2].

Mission and Activities

The primary mission of the Talita Kum School Fund is to financially support the operations of the Talita Kum School, which serves children with disabilities and social disadvantages in Colombia. The school receives no government funding and is entirely reliant on donations raised by the Fund in the UK.

Funds raised cover essential needs including:

  • Education costs for each child
  • Teachers’ salaries
  • Food and nutrition for the students
  • Utilities such as electricity and cooking gas
  • Educational resources such as stationery and internet access

Donors can sponsor children directly, with a typical sponsorship of £35 per month covering a child's education for a year. Other donation levels support various operational costs such as teacher salaries and school supplies. The Fund ensures that every penny donated is sent directly to the school with no overhead costs deducted within the UK, apart from minor currency exchange fees[2][5].

Impact

The Talita Kum School serves children facing a variety of challenges, including disabilities and difficult personal circumstances. Individual stories of pupils, such as children coping with disabilities or personal loss, illustrate the school's role in providing opportunities for these children to develop skills and confidence in an inclusive educational environment.

With a modest annual running cost of approximately £12,630, the Fund aims to sustain the school's current operations while aspiring to expand resources such as purchasing musical instruments or hiring additional staff to enhance the educational experience[5].

Governance and Structure

The Talita Kum School Fund is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in the UK. The charity operates transparently, with details publicly available through the Charity Commission and Companies House registers[3].

The Talita Kum School Fund exemplifies a focused international charity model, raising awareness and financial support from UK donors to improve the lives of vulnerable children in Colombia through education and care.

TALITA KUM SCHOOL Every child matters WHO WE ARE Talita Kum School offers a chance of education to up to 40 children with special educational needs who would not be accepted or would struggle in the Colombian education system. The school was founded fifteen years ago by Roberto Martignago who was then in charge of a rehabilitation school for street children but who saw there was a need for disabled and disadvantaged children locally Please read more about what the parents and teachers say about the school here. The school is now run by Sonia Diaz with the support of another teacher Amanda and volunteers from the community. Below is just one of the quotes from testimonials there are more here.
