Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe

Overview

The Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe is a UK nonprofit organisation dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of the historic Zion Graveyard, a non-conformist burial ground located in Attercliffe, Sheffield. The charity, with registration number 1188411, focuses on preserving this historical site and enhancing its biodiversity.

History

Zion Graveyard was once neglected and faced potential redevelopment, but thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Zion Graveyard, it has been rescued from such fates. The group raised funds to purchase the site, ensuring its protection against development, such as conversion into a car storage compound.

Activities and Significance

  • Conservation and Gardening: The organisation is involved in gardening and nurturing wildlife within the graveyard, thereby contributing to its ecological value.
  • Historical Preservation: Zion Graveyard is the final resting place for several notable figures, including Mary Ann Rawson, a prominent Victorian anti-slavery campaigner, and possibly Elizabeth and Joseph Read and their daughter, who were Victorian philanthropists. Efforts to locate their exact gravesites have contributed to the site's historical significance.

Community Engagement and Heritage

The graveyard participates in events like Heritage Open Days, offering visitors a chance to explore and learn about the forgotten heritage of this once-abandoned site. This involvement helps raise awareness and encourages community engagement with the graveyard's rich history.

Contribution to Local Ecology

By maintaining the graveyard as a wildlife haven, the Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe contribute to the local biodiversity, providing an urban wildlife sanctuary amidst an industrial area. This blend of historical preservation and environmental stewardship makes the organisation a unique contributor to community life in Attercliffe.

Thank you for helping save the graves of old Attercliffe . Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and to a Big Lottery Sharing Heritage Grant Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe were able to purchase the disused burial ground of Zion Congregational Church in 2018 and save it as a historic and natural heritage site for the benefit of generations to come. This site is the burial ground of antislavery campaigner Mary Anne Rawson and her family including her father Joseph Read who was the second generation owner of The Sheffield Smelting Company TheSSCo founded in 1760 as Read Lucas. Also buried here is acrosssection of the population of Attercliffe in the 1800s from a time when it was an important village prominent in the early days of Sheffields metal industry.
