Harbury e-Wheels

Harbury e-Wheels is a UK nonprofit organisation that provides free transportation services using electric vehicles to individuals in need, particularly within a 15-mile radius of Harbury, Warwickshire. It was founded in November 2015 by Bob Sherman and Hugh Tottle.

Harbury e-Wheels emerged from a government grant-funded electric vehicle car-sharing hub in Harbury Village. Initially, it operated as part of this hub but later became an independent entity. In 2019, the charity registered as a separate organisation, and by October of that year, the original car club had closed. However, the charitable arm continued to thrive, offering social transport services to the local community.

Operations and Services

The organisation is supported by a team of volunteers, currently consisting of around 22 to 24 individuals, depending on the source. This includes drivers, coordinators, board members, and an administrator. Some volunteers hold multiple roles, ensuring efficient management of the service[3][5]. Harbury e-Wheels collaborates with local social agencies, such as surgeries, hospitals, Children’s Centres, Citizens Advice, AgeUK, and local councils, to provide transport to those who have difficulty accessing essential services due to financial or physical constraints[1][5]. The service is available to anyone but requires minors to be accompanied by a parent or guardian[3].

Achievements and Partnerships

By February 2020, Harbury e-Wheels had provided over 5,000 hours of free transport. The organisation gained recognition for its contributions to the community, receiving the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in June 2022[1][5]. Harbury e-Wheels has partnered with organisations like Electric Zoo, which has supported them in their mission to provide sustainable transport solutions[5].
