The Black Mountains Land Use Partnership

The Black Mountains Land Use Partnership (BMLUP) is a UK nonprofit organization established to promote the restoration and sustainable management of the Black Mountains, enhancing the wellbeing and economic resilience of local communities. The partnership was formed through the Welsh Government's Nature Fund in 2015.

Location and Area

The Black Mountains are situated in the east of the Brecon Beacons National Park, spanning across Powys, Monmouthshire, and extending into Herefordshire across the Welsh-English border. The area covers approximately 24,600 hectares, with about a third designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), highlighting its national and international conservation significance.

Purpose and Activities

BMLUP acts as a collaborative forum involving local landowners, graziers, and regulatory bodies such as the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Water, and Natural England. The partnership focuses on:

  • Conservation and Sustainable Management: Promoting technological advancements and preserving the natural capital, including water, soil, wildlife, and biodiversity.
  • Community Engagement: Raising awareness among public and local communities on conservation and preservation.
  • Environmental Projects: Engaging in projects like the Sustainable Management Scheme, which includes initiatives such as footpath restoration, enhancing both visitor safety and environmental protection.

Projects and Achievements

One of the notable projects undertaken by the partnership is the restoration of footpaths, such as the Offa's Dyke Path, a key component of the Sustainable Management Scheme funded by the Welsh Government and the European Union. This initiative not only protects the environment but also improves visitor experiences through safer trails.

Evaluation and Success Metrics

The partnership measures its success through community engagement and practical project outcomes. Annual surveys and monitoring are integral to project evaluation, enabling strategic planning for future initiatives. The results from their projects have shown positive feedback, contributing to increased community involvement and support each year.
