The Jewish Square Mile Foundation

Overview

The Jewish Square Mile Foundation is a UK nonprofit organization focused on revealing and celebrating the history of the Jewish community in medieval London. This organization aims to provide a more accurate understanding of Jewish life during that period, countering outdated stereotypes often portrayed in literature.

Mission

The primary goal of the foundation is to educate the public about the contributions and lives of Jews in medieval London. This includes highlighting the experiences of Jewish people who initially lived in the area before their expulsion in the 13th century and those who returned following their readmission to England in 1656.

Events and Activities

The foundation organizes a variety of events to engage the public with the history of Jewish London, including guided walks and exhibitions. These events often explore historical sites such as the Jewish Cemetery and areas around the City of London, Barbican, and St Giles Cripplegate.

Some notable events include:

  • The Jewish Square Mile Walks: Regular guided tours led by various experts, such as Sam Jacobs, focusing on different aspects of Jewish history in the area.
  • Launch Event: Medieval Jewish London Revealed: An evening event held at St Giles Cripplegate, inaugurating exhibitions and discussions about medieval Jewish London.
  • Exhibitions: Extended displays at venues like St Giles Cripplegate and Bevis Marks, showcasing artifacts and stories from medieval Jewish life.

Impact

The Jewish Square Mile Foundation plays a significant role in enriching cultural understanding and heritage preservation by highlighting the often-overlooked history of Jewish communities in London. By organizing educational walks and exhibitions, it helps to create a more nuanced and accurate picture of Jewish life during the medieval period.

Charity Status

The organization is registered as a charity in the UK with the number 1211797.

The only publicly accessible part of the burial ground lies below the BarberSurgeons Gardens although the entire area can be viewed from the Defoe House and Wallside Highwalks. 1000 YEARS OF HISTORY A 1000 year old Jewish burial ground lies just outside the Roman Wall surrounding the City of London. On the other side of this wall was the original Jewry in a medieval street pattern which still exists.
