Lymphedema Association of Saskatchewan Inc.

The Lymphedema Association of Saskatchewan Inc. (LAS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and education to individuals affected by or at risk of developing lymphedema and related lymphatic disorders.

History

Founded in 2004, LAS was established by a group of individuals who recognized the necessity of addressing and managing lymphedema in Saskatchewan. Since its inception, the organization has been committed to empowering those affected by these conditions through education and support.

Objectives

LAS has several key objectives:

  • Health Promotion: The organization aims to promote health by organizing annual symposiums on lymphedema management for both health professionals and patients.
  • Education: LAS provides workshops and educational materials related to the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema, targeting both professionals and individuals affected.
  • Support: By offering counseling services and establishing mutual support groups, LAS aims to support those affected by lymphedema.
  • Charitable Activities: The association undertakes various activities that are incidental and ancillary to achieving its charitable purposes.

Treatment Approach

LAS endorses the Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression bandaging, education on lymphedema management, exercise to enhance lymphatic flow, and skin care to prevent infections. This treatment approach aligns with the standards set by the Lymphedema Association of North America (LANA) and is recognized by the Canadian Lymphedema Framework (CLF). Therapists listed by LAS have completed a minimum of 135 hours of advanced training in these methods.

Operations

LAS facilitates access to Certified Lymphedema Therapists throughout Saskatchewan's health regions, with services funded by Saskatchewan Health, allowing individuals to receive treatment without cost. While a physician's referral may be required in some cases, self-referral options are available in certain locations.

Status

The Lymphedema Association of Saskatchewan Inc. is registered under the business registration number 844468074RR0001, reflecting its status as a recognized charity in Canada.
