Revelstoke Search and Rescue Society
The Revelstoke Search and Rescue Society, registered under the Canadian Business Number 792981714RR0001, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the search and rescue of lost and injured individuals in the mountainous region surrounding Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1952, the organization operates under the auspices of Emergency Management BC (EMBC), a branch of the provincial Ministry of Justice.
Mission and Activities
Revelstoke Search and Rescue is a 100% volunteer-based organization that specializes in a variety of rescue services, including Snowmobile Rescue, Helicopter Rescue (using Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) or Helicopter Evacuation Transportation Systems (HETS)), Avalanche Rescue, Technical Rope Rescue, Swift-water Rescue, and K9 operations. Beyond these specialized services, REVSAR also assists in searches for missing persons, evidence searches, coroner requests, and backcountry medical aid, in addition to providing outreach services.
Structure
The organization is structured with two main leadership components: the Operations Manager Group, responsible to EMBC for operational functions, and the Board of Directors, which oversees non-operational duties such as funding, administration, and public outreach. The Board of Directors is elected by the members of Revelstoke Search and Rescue at biennial Annual General Meetings (AGMs).
Current Developments
Revelstoke Search and Rescue is currently involved in fundraising efforts for the development of a new Operations Centre. This initiative reflects the organization's commitment to enhancing its capabilities and services in the community.
Public Engagement
As part of the broader BC Search and Rescue network, which includes 78 ground search and rescue groups across the province, Revelstoke SAR is part of a collective effort involving over 3,400 volunteers. These volunteers contribute hundreds of hours annually to search and rescue operations, highlighting the dedication and expertise within the organization.
