Saanich Volunteer Services Society

The Saanich Volunteer Services Society (SVSS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and promoting independent living for residents in the Municipality of Saanich. Established in 1992, the society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Mission

The primary mission of SVSS is to provide coordinated volunteer services that support individuals, particularly those who need assistance to maintain their independence. This includes a range of services such as supported transportation, companionship, help with light gardening, minor home repairs, computer assistance, telephone visitation, income tax preparation, and food delivery. Additionally, SVSS offers referral services for needs that fall outside their scope.

Services and Impact

SVSS engages volunteers to deliver one-on-one direct services to clients. The organization emphasizes social interaction through visits and telephone calls, which can be invaluable for preventing isolation and enhancing communication among community members. As of recent years, SVSS has supported over 944 clients with volunteers contributing more than 9,000 hours of service annually, equivalent to several full-time staff positions.

SVSS is recognized as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency, with the business registration number 140487240RR0001. The organization relies on funding from individual donors, the Municipality of Saanich, Vancouver Island Health Authority, the Provincial Employees Community Service Fund, and the Ministry of Attorney General Gaming. This financial support enables SVSS to maintain its operations and deliver vital services to the community.
