Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program
The Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program is a Canadian registered charity (Business Number: 801414939RR0001) established in 2009 to provide inclusive hockey opportunities for individuals with physical, emotional, or neurodevelopmental challenges. The organization serves players of all ages, including children, teens, and adults, prioritizing skill development, social engagement, and teamwork in a non-contact format.

History
Founded by Carol and David Fisher, the program was created to address the lack of adaptive hockey options for participants with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, ADHD, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The program paused operations during the 2020–2021 season due to COVID-19 safety concerns but resumed play the following year. In 2022, the Fishers retired, transferring leadership to a volunteer board of directors.

Structure and Operations
The Komets organize players into teams based on skill level rather than age, focusing on inclusivity and individualized support. Sessions are held primarily at the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough, Ontario, with volunteers assisting in coaching, administrative, and fundraising roles. The program is affiliated with Canadian National Special Hockey and emphasizes community-building through sport.

Community Impact
As a volunteer-driven charity, the Komets rely on sponsorships and donations to subsidize equipment, ice time, and operational costs. The organization aims to foster confidence, physical activity, and lifelong friendships among participants, aligning with its mission of "Making Dreams Come True" for players with diverse abilities.
