OTO-Wa Taiko Group
The Oto-Wa Taiko Group (registered charity 139743645RR0001) is a Canadian nonprofit organization specializing in traditional Japanese drumming performances, education, and cultural outreach. Established in 1989 by members of the Ottawa Japanese Community Association, the group promotes taiko drumming as both an art form and a communal activity in Canada's National Capital Region and beyond.

History

Oto-Wa Taiko began as a community initiative with no access to drums; early members practiced on car tires, a method common for beginners in Japan. The name combines the Japanese words oto (sound), wa (harmony), and taiko (drum), reflecting its roots in Ottawa and emphasis on collective unity. Over three decades, the group evolved into a prominent cultural entity, collaborating with North American taiko pioneers such as Montreal’s Arashi Daiko, Toronto’s Nagata Shachu, and international performers including Kodo’s Yoshikazu Fujimoto and San Francisco Taiko Dojo’s Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka.

Activities

Oto-Wa Taiko conducts public and school performances, recreational workshops, and structured taiko classes. Its repertoire includes original compositions and pieces adapted from Japanese ensembles, often refined through participation in events like the North American Taiko Conference. The group performs regularly at local festivals, private events, and international stages, including appearances in Montreal, Toronto, Sendai (Japan), and Rochester, New York.

Structure

The organization operates as a member-driven collective, prioritizing member enjoyment alongside cultural promotion. Key roles include artistic direction, performance coordination, and instructional leadership. Notable members include Aki (treasurer, instructor since 1989), Tomomi (president since 2003), and Shiho (artistic/technical director since 2018).

As one of Canada’s longest-running taiko groups, Oto-Wa Taiko has fostered cross-cultural exchange and community engagement.
