North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church

North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church is a Canadian nonprofit religious organization located in the North Kildonan area of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It operates as a multi-generational church that is passionate about hosting gatherings focused on connecting people with Jesus. The church’s mission is to know Jesus, to be known for knowing Jesus, and to invite others to know Jesus.

History

The North Kildonan area was first settled by Mennonite immigrants in 1928, who initially came to Canada a few years earlier and settled in Winnipeg’s core. The area was originally designed as a rural Mennonite village with small farm lots, which attracted Mennonite settlers. Early congregants of the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church were members of the North End Mennonite Brethren Church, but as distance made attendance difficult, a Sunday school program and worship services began in private homes in 1928.

The church’s first meeting house was built in 1929 and was shared by both Mennonite Brethren (MB) and General Conference (GC) Mennonite groups until the GC built a separate meeting house in 1935. Worship transitioned from German to English during the 1970s. The MB congregation’s meeting house on Edison Avenue was enlarged multiple times during the 1930s and '40s, and a new building was constructed on Kingsford Avenue in 1956. After a fire destroyed that building in 1998, the current church facility was built on Gateway Road in 2000.

Programs and Activities

The church offers weekly worship services, including in-person gatherings and online streaming. It provides various ministries such as GriefShare, a grief recovery support group serving the Winnipeg community. The church has historically fostered musical groups, including the Guitaren Choir, which was active from 1989 until 2011 and provided music ministry under several directors.

Leadership and Community

North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church emphasizes relevance in its teaching to address contemporary challenges. Leadership has included pastors and administrators dedicated to faith development and community support.

The church continues to serve as a spiritual and community hub for Mennonites and others in the North Kildonan area, maintaining its tradition of faith, worship, and outreach.
