Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies

The Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies (CFUS) is a federally registered charitable organization in Canada, established in 1975 by the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation. Initially known as the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Foundation until 1979, CFUS is dedicated to promoting and supporting Ukrainian studies across Canada and globally.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of the CFUS is to foster the growth and development of Ukrainian studies at the post-secondary level. This includes supporting the initiation, development, and implementation of Ukrainian studies programs in Canadian universities, focusing on scholarly teaching and research related to Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in Canada. Additionally, CFUS aims to facilitate the development, coordination, and financing of research and scholarly publications in Ukrainian studies, as well as the creation and dissemination of educational materials needed for these studies.

CFUS also seeks to establish and maintain networks among scholars in the field by supporting conferences and exchanges within Canada and internationally. Furthermore, it encourages and prepares students at all educational levels to participate in Ukrainian studies at post-secondary institutions.

Activities and Impact

Since its inception, CFUS has contributed significantly to various initiatives in Ukrainian studies. These include:

• Financial Support: Over three million dollars have been granted for publications, research projects, scholarships, new university courses, explorations of Ukrainian cinema, public lectures, and conferences.
• Geographical Reach: CFUS supports scholars and graduate students at universities across Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, McGill, Newfoundland, Ottawa, Queen's, Toronto, and Victoria. It also collaborates with institutions in Ukraine, such as the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Ostroh Academy National Universities.
• Notable Projects: CFUS was involved in the Encyclopedia of Ukraine project and has supported numerous graduate fellowships, academic research, and the publication of scholarly works.
