Tallgrass Ontario

Tallgrass Ontario, also known as the Ontario Tallgrass Prairie and Savanna Association, is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of tallgrass prairies and savannas in Ontario. Established in 1999, the organization aims to identify, conserve, manage, and restore these ecosystems primarily in Southern Ontario.

Mission

The mission of Tallgrass Ontario is to focus on the conservation and restoration of tallgrass prairies, savannas, and related ecological communities. This involves working collaboratively with landowners, governments, non-profits, and other stakeholders to achieve these goals. Given that Southern Ontario is a region with significant conservation challenges—such as having a large population and less than 2% of the land in public ownership—Tallgrass Ontario plays a critical role in protecting biodiversity in the area.

Activities

Tallgrass Ontario engages in several activities to support its mission, including:

• Data Sharing and Mapping: The organization uses geographic information systems (GIS) to map areas of ecological significance and provide data to support conservation efforts.
• Public Outreach and Education: By offering resources and educational materials, Tallgrass Ontario encourages public participation and awareness about the importance of tallgrass ecosystems.
• Volunteer Training: The organization trains volunteers in various tasks necessary for prairie restoration projects, fostering a community of engaged individuals committed to environmental conservation.
• Science and Research: Tallgrass Ontario provides resources on how to identify, establish, and maintain grasslands, contributing to scientific knowledge and practical conservation strategies.

Publications

The organization publishes the Bluestem Banner, a newsletter that updates members and supporters on its projects and initiatives. Additionally, it offers guides such as Planting the Seed, A Guide to Establishing Prairie and Meadow in Southern Ontario, which serves as a practical tool for landowners and conservationists interested in grassland restoration.

Registration

Tallgrass Ontario is a registered charity under the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with the business registration number 887877819RR0001. As a registered charity, it is eligible to issue tax receipts for donations, making it easier for supporters to contribute financially to its conservation work.
