First Unitarian Church of Victoria
The First Unitarian Church of Victoria is a prominent liberal religious institution located in the Greater Victoria area of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC) and has a strong presence in social justice and community service.
History
The Unitarian presence in Victoria began in 1909, with regular services and a small religious school for children. These early services were supported by visiting ministers from England and the United States. However, this initial congregation concluded its services in 1927.
A new Unitarian Fellowship was established in 1950, starting with small, monthly home meetings. Over time, the fellowship grew significantly, and by 1977, the members had acquired a building at 106 Superior Street in the James Bay neighborhood. This allowed for the expansion of their children's religious education programs.
In 1993, the congregation sold the 106 Superior Street building and purchased the current property. Here, they built a new sanctuary to enhance their worship and community activities. This move marked a significant step in the development of the church's infrastructure and commitment to the local community.
Social Impact
The First Unitarian Church of Victoria is known for its active engagement in social justice. Its Social Responsibility Council has been instrumental in addressing various local and national issues, aligning with the broader Unitarian Universalist principles of promoting justice, equality, and compassion.
Significance
The church is part of a network that includes other Unitarian Universalist congregations across Canada. In Canada, Unitarianism is organized under the Canadian Unitarian Council, which was formed in 1961. This organization allows Canadian congregations like the First Unitarian Church of Victoria to maintain close ties with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) in the United States while also fostering a distinct Canadian identity in Unitarianism.
Community and Identity
The inclusion of "Victoria" in the church's name reflects its connection to the local community and its role as a welcoming presence in the region. While technically located in Saanich, the church serves a broader area, including communities from Sidney to Sooke. The name helps distinguish it from other Unitarian congregations in Canada, such as those in Toronto or Winnipeg, and serves as a beacon for those seeking a liberal religious community in the Victoria area.
The church's identity also includes a strong sense of community and fellowship, rather than a creedal center, reflecting the broader Unitarian emphasis on personal and collective spiritual growth over dogma.
