VisionQuest Recovery Society

Overview

The VisionQuest Recovery Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorder. Incorporated under the Societies Act, it is recognized as a registered charity.

Mission

The society's mission is to empower individuals to make positive lifestyle choices by providing a safe, accountable, and therapeutic environment for recovery. They focus on bringing equity to low-income and marginalized communities, offering comprehensive healing programs that address the mind, body, and spirit based on 12-step philosophy and recovery capital. This approach emphasizes the value of each individual's life, perspective, and experiences in achieving long-term sobriety.

Programs and Facilities

VisionQuest operates three main facilities:

• VQ – The Lake: A 60-bed men's first-stage facility located in Logan Lake, BC.
• Harte House: A 10-bed women's first and second-stage program in Surrey, BC.
• Discovery House: A 10-bed men's second-stage program in Abbotsford, BC.

Additionally, they offer an intensive outpatient program for women. Their programs are structured to accommodate the needs of all attendees, considering traumas experienced by residents.

Program Structure

The organization provides a six-month to one-year program, which is based on a neuro-psychological perspective to address the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of addiction. This extended program allows clients sufficient time to heal, learn new coping strategies, establish a sober identity, and connect with like-minded individuals.

History and Community Engagement

VisionQuest first gained public attention in 1997 with the VisionQuest Canoe Journey, a 1,000-mile paddle from Hazelton to Victoria. Since then, the society has worked to create safe spaces for recovery across diverse backgrounds. VisionQuest collaborates with educational institutions, such as an ongoing partnership with School District 73 in Kamloops, to support clients in completing their education.

Future Directions

The society is focused on expanding its services, including increasing Stage 2 housing for women and adding Stage 3 long-term sober living accommodations for both men and women. VisionQuest also aims to enhance its counseling and client services.

Challenges and Fundraising Initiatives

Currently, VisionQuest faces the challenge of maintaining its fleet of vehicles, which are essential for transporting residents and supplies. The organization is involved in fundraising efforts to replace aging vehicles to ensure continued support for its clients.
