## Division of General Practice Northern Tasmania Inc

The **Division of General Practice Northern Tasmania Inc**, commonly known as **GP North**, is a nonprofit organisation established in 1992 to support general practitioners (GPs) and primary healthcare services in Northern Tasmania's 0363 telephone region. It operates under ABN 21035139193RR0001.

### History
GP North originated as part of a nationwide network of over 100 local divisions focused on improving community health through education, advocacy, and service delivery. During its early years, it implemented health promotion programs, preventive care initiatives, and workforce support systems.

In 2011–2012, the Australian government transitioned many divisions into Medicare Locals under its Primary Health Care Organisations reform. GP North retained independence due to its infrastructure investments, including the Scottsdale Health Centre and the now-sold St Helens Medical Practice. A revised constitution and governance structure were adopted to focus on sustaining GP support in the region.

### Activities
The organisation provides education, professional resources, and collaborative platforms for GPs. Key efforts include coordinating specialist-GP partnerships for skill development and funding subscriptions to medical resources. Historically, it participated in cross-sector initiatives such as the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding with Tasmania's health department and regional divisions to improve primary care integration.

### Governance
GP North is managed by an elected committee overseeing its financial and operational activities. Membership is open to active or retired GPs, as well as registrars, within the 0363 area.
