Originally, scholarship funds were raised through membership levies and proceeds from an academic dress hiring service operated at the University of Adelaide from 1935 to 2009. After the service ceased, the trust's main income sources shifted to investment returns, donations, and bequests.
Mission
The trust focuses on supporting women in tertiary education at South Australian universities. It annually awards scholarships to assist with higher degrees research and postgraduate studies, recognizing no specific field of study as a requirement for eligibility. This approach ensures that women in various disciplines have equal opportunities to access funding for their educational pursuits.
Scholarships and Prizes
The trust offers scholarships with values not exceeding $6,000, although the amount may vary based on the number of successful applicants and available funds. In addition to scholarships, it also supports prizes such as the Maria Lane Aboriginal Education Prize, the Winifred Preedy Prize in Dentistry, and the Nancy Webb Prize in Mathematics, which recognize achievements in specific fields of study.
Administration and Funding
The trust is administered by appointed trustees who volunteer their services. At least 75% of the trust's annual income is distributed as scholarships, with the remainder contributing to its investment base. Donations exceeding $2 are tax-deductible, supporting the trust's ongoing mission to enhance educational opportunities for women in South Australia.
The legacy of the Graduate Women South Australia (GWSA), which ceased operations in 2016, continues through the trust, reflecting the organization's commitment to gender equality and access to quality education.
