Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery of Adelaide
The Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery of Adelaide is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the teachings of the Buddha for the spiritual development of individuals. Established as part of the global network of Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monasteries, it aims to provide spiritual guidance and support to the broader community.
History and Founding
The Mahamevnawa movement was initiated by Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero on August 14, 1999, in Sri Lanka. Since its inception, it has grown into one of the largest Theravada Buddhist organizations worldwide, with branches in numerous countries including Australia[1][2].
Mission and Activities
The monastery focuses on showcasing the original teachings of the Buddha. It emphasizes practices that cultivate wholesome mental states, such as loving-kindness, compassion, altruistic joy, and equanimity. The mission includes promoting the Precepts, which are fundamental virtues that lead to noble qualities, social cohesion, and ultimate happiness through the ending of suffering[1].
The monastery offers various programs for children, youth, and the elderly, providing systematic guidance for training and practicing Dhamma (the teachings of the Buddha). These programs aim to foster personal and spiritual growth by encouraging participants to abandon harmful speech and actions, promoting a peaceful and harmonious lifestyle[1][4].
Community Involvement
By emphasizing the importance of qualities such as patience, generosity, gratitude, and respect towards parents, teachers, and elders, the monastery contributes to building a respectful and harmonious community. It encourages the community to observe and protect the Precepts, which are seen as essential for achieving a peaceful and happy life filled with mutual respect[1].
International Network
As part of the Mahamevnawa network, the Adelaide monastery is connected to over 130 branches globally, including more than 80 in Sri Lanka and nearly 40 overseas. This network supports a large number of monks and nuns dedicated to spreading Buddhist teachings[2].
