Scouting in the Northern Territory has a long history dating back to the first registered group in Darwin in 1928, initially under the Boy Scouts Association New South Wales Branch before transitioning to Queensland and then South Australian administration. The Northern Territory Area was officially formed by The Scout Association of Australia in 1973. On 1 April 1989, the Northern Territory Branch was formally established as a distinct branch. Commodore Eric Johnston, then Administrator of the Northern Territory, became the inaugural Chief Scout of the Branch, a role traditionally held by successive Administrators of the Northern Territory.
